Tournament: Dinamo Red Star 0 – 1 Lions FC

Match Report – 30 January 2011
Dinamo Red Star | 0 – 1 | Lions FC

Yet another turn in the Red Star v Lions saga. These two teams have played each other evenly over the past few season. With the series tied at 2 wins and 2 losses for each team, Lions pulls into the series lead by taking this one five minutes from regulation.

The game was close with chances on both sides and everyone knew this nail-biter would come down to one mistake or one miracle strike. The latter is exactly what happened when a Lions mid sent in a shot from distance off a poorly cleared ball.

All is not lost as the tournament is double elimination. We will meets these guys again!

4 Gotham games in a row snowed out in the Metro League but CSC is getting busy still due to adamant ground keeping at their home pitch on Stanton — read more at the Newswire.

FK Dinamo 0 Valhalla 3

Destined to be a tough game as 5 met 1 in the table. It was all even with FK on top until the 35th minute and a yellow card for Kareem who came out to tackle their number9 who made the most of it with a trailing leg that Kareem caught. Shuffling for 6 minutes meant the very solid Araya kept the goal, Theo dropped into the back and Benny D dropped into center mid.

It was during the shuffle that they stole the first – with Araya’s parry not held and the certainly off-side number 7 coming in for the rebound. We’d already been denied a nailed on penalty for a hand ball in the box (which infuriated the tremendous Matt P) so it looked like Alex wasn’t in the mood to give us anything.

Solid again till the half, and it wasn’t until 25 minute into the second half that they got their second – we were uncharacteristically hesitant at the back while we moved from two holding to two up top after the graft master Gavin B was yellow carded. Matt and Gavin had been absolutely terrific as Carrick and Scholes, but Gav’s yellow was a Scholesy challenge that any of us would have made – we had nearly everyone in the box looking for the equalizer and Gav was deputizing for Araya and Ousman – they broke he struck :)

So with 10 minutes left and having had entirely the best of the open play (no finishing today though lads) we threw everything and the kitchen sink at them with Benny D, Nick Esp and Rosario T up top and Gavin covering for Rosario at left back. You might as well lose 3-0 as 2-0, and with everything in attack and with the boys leaving absolutely everything on the pitch that’s what happened.

But this was an astonishing performance, with moments of Arsenal and counter attacks out of the Fergie playbook, Valhalla knew we were the better team and that they’d been very lucky on the night. Boyley, Benny and Nick had all left a couple of chances on the table but made up for that with toil. Any other eam in the league and we play like that and they’re battered.

Tournament action starts this weekend 1/9/2011 !

Has it really been that long since we played footie ?
Actually, no – since the lucky Dinamo Saturn boys have been playing 6 v 6 at CASL on Tuesday nights …
Here’s the forthcoming city tourney stuff:

Dinamo Internazionale vs Real Sociedad @ Griffith Park 1/9 8:00am
Dinamo Turbine vs Cougars @ Rio De Los Angeles 1/9 10:30am
Dinamo Lokomotiv vs Deportivo Armenia @ Griffith Park 1/11 7:00pm
Dinamo Red Star vs TBC @ Mar Vista 1/23 2:55pm (what a wait…)

The Turbine ladies are especially excited since it didn’t look like their tourney would happen – but it’s ON !!

Gotham 3 – Arup 2

Looks like an upswing for Gotham. After several months of ups and downs, all over the table in summer, spring and winter, injuries by key players like Taylor, Quinn, Jason, losses to LA (Brett) the squad seems to stabilizing. The core Jimenez attack force, and new additions Juan, Patrick and Steve have worked out super along with the old school core (Avi, George and Jesse).

Really tight game tonight with Dinamo LA (or NYer via LA) Tony P. between the sticks. Super quick goal by the Arup team due to faulty pass by yours truly but a quick response to even it up from a scorcher by Steve. Just before half time right fullback, Juan Camilo, in what may be the goal of the season, in a Maradona / Messi like run, including running behind a defender out of bounds and somehow ending up with the ball and from an insane angle, booooom. Obviously the description does no justice.

Andres scored the third in the second half and it was pretty and well deserved. Credit goes to everyone for hustling even Pat and his 1045 conference call to Asia. Although I gotta bust Tomas’ huevos for missing a couple shots in front of goal but after a big meal and some beers and a string of awesome strikes in recent games we can give him a break. (If Andy is the lungs of the team Tomas is the heart. Lucas, you the brains?)

Oh, a yellow card for Steve who simply responded to the “i will take care of you later after the game” threat by the Arup team member (Arup is an international engineering firm not some East New York crew) with a “what are you talking about?” Go home toys. Gotham 3 – Arup 2.

Dinamo Zenit 2 MRL United 2 DZ win on pens – Marc’s match report

We beat these guys earlier in the season 2-1 with some last minute heroics and they were even tougher yesterday. The ref let the players decide it as he swallowed his whistle – the pics show it.

There was some back n forth early then we wound up with a set play deep in enemy territory. Olman fooled everyone by keep the kick low and on the ground to a waiting Alejandro who effortlessly slid it by their unsuspecting keeper. Good start.

We were in command until golden boots (#2) came down the right side and hit a perfect cross that caught everyone ball watching while their smallest player got to the back post and headed it just under the cross bar. 1-1.

Spirits were still pretty high at the half. That will be the last time I joke about PK’s though. I promise.

Lots of back n forth in the 2nd half. Golden Boots got loose and launched a shot. As I moved to my left it took a deflection and went to my right. Terra got a great shot of me twisting back to somehow get to it.

Our defense held strong – Ryan, Olman, JP and the sorely missed Nick took care of business. While up top Peter was getting killed time and time again when he tried to shake loose. The ref actually called a foul at some point. And Zenit (apparently the set play kings) had a free kick just outside the box. Pete absolutely drilled a shot through the wall that the keeper somehow blocked. Thank God for “right place, right time” Phil – rebound & goal. 2-1.

Well MRL came with everything they had. Our defense was game for the attack…except for that one wittle, itty, bitty time we just could not seem to clear the ball. Golden Boots blocked a clearance and shuffled a pass past our line. Their guy barely touched it by me as I slammed into him. Nick, apparently out of practice on goal line clearances, arrived a tad late to this one. 2-2.

So this war of attrition – inevitably it seems – made it’s way to PK’s. While I lacked the Grey Goose, wet NY street and drunken Irish shooter – I was confident.

Shooter #1 walked up placed the ball and…get this…smiled at me. Based on ball placement and where he lined up I knew he was going to me left, but he still made a show of looking at both corners as he ran up. Whatever, he never had a chance. Pete slammed his home. 1-0.

I wasn’t going to stop the next one even if I went the right way. Top left corner. That’s ok. Olman was next. This guy takes PK’s on me prior to every game and picks now to do his Dejan impression and launch one on to the tennis courts. I knew shooter #3 was going to my right and he hit it perfect just out of my reach. I think Nick was next and he put it away.

Golden Boots walked up. Placed the ball and from his position could only go to my left. He was going to try and bend it close to the post but as the pic shows I was way ahead of the ball. Julio was next but a well timed shout from the MRL faithful distracted him into a shot saved by the GK. #5 took their best shot to my right by the post. Alejandro, as he does in warm up, made his look easy and as their GK walked by me, said “now it get’s interesting.”

Well…you guys made it interesting but it was time to go home. The next guy peeked to my right but lined up a kick to my left. The picture will show you I was diving left prior to the ball even entering the picture. Then One legged Yossi ended it.

Zenit to the Semi’s.

Despite the reporting it was a team effort all around. EVERYBODY had a hand in this one. Whether you played 1 min or 90. We will need you all again next week as it only gets tougher.

Fernando…we held the fort down buddy. Get back soon.

JP…we are going to miss your grit and determination back right. Always cool under pressure I never had to worry about my right. I know it would be quite the commute to get up from SD but my commute is still longer.
